Outdoor lighting and Crime: little or no benefit?

If you're interrested, this is a link to a paper published in Australia based on research in the effectiveness of artifitial light in the prevention of crime.

It's interresting if you have the time. It may help in respect to decisions surrounding the existing lights in the parkette.

basketball tournament?

a few years ago, some neighbours (who have since moved) and I organized the Vine Avenue Parkette basketball tournament for two years. We advertised in the Villager, got donations from Shoppers' and No Frills, and Vesuvio's, and organized 3-on-3 tournaments on a Saturday morning. The teenagers really enjoyed it, and one of them stopped me in the park and said how much he and his friends enjoyed it, and why don't we do it again?

It'sa great way to get to know the kids on a first-name basis, and do something for them. No one else seems to do anything for them, even their own parents, who are too busy to know what they are getting up to in the park.
They are a nice bunch of kids, really, they just need some......attention, and we need to get to know them better.
If others would like to pitch in, we could do it again. The last week in July would suit me best.

Vine Ave -garden and teens

Nice to see people out last night.

I'd like to start helping out with the indigenous garden, and try to organize, or at least involve the youth who hang out in the park in these discussions. I think that this park revitalization needs to also focus on the teenagers and improving the areas of the park that they use.

I am going to try to chat with some of the teens who use the park, see if we can't set up a little community meeting with them, and get their voices involved somehow. Could be tricky with some of them though.

I can always be reached at kerrypotts@hotmail.com if anyone wants to discuss the garden or the teens.

Thanks!

Tell Your Friends

Nothing earth shattering here, but we have an email address which is...
vineaveparkette@gmail.com. Not sure what we can use it for but it is ours.

If anyone one has photos of the park
good, bad or just plain ugly please post them.

First Post!

Hello World,

This is the Vine Avenue Parkette blog, where you can come and post links to groovy new playground equipment, discuss the efficacy of lights in a park at night and plan get-togethers.
This will be the forum for us, the community, to discuss, plan and enact the future of the Vine Avenue Parkette.

cheers,
